The Process

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR custom ORDER

1. Step One:

Complete questionnaire (“ready to book”)

Begin the ordering process online by filling out a simple questionnaire. Don’t worry, if you have any questions or get stuck we can assist. You can always just call, email, or DM us as well.

Once we receive your questionnaire we will set up a time for a consultation. This way we can help ensure your order is exactly what you want it to be.

2. Step Two

DROP OFF YOUR FLOWERS (OR order a pick-up service)

We request to drop off your flowers ideally within 48 hours of your wedding, memorial or special occasion. If it is longer than this, please let us know asap.

Upon receiving your flowers we will make any necessary final updates to the order. All drop-offs must be by appointment.

Pick up service available for an additional fee.

3. Step Three

PETAL PREPARATION (SIT BACK AND RELAX)

This is where the magic happens. We delicately, by hand, get each petal ready for its journey into the freeze dryer or silica based gel.

Each flower, if required, gets a treatment of natural products that help preserve its color and structure during the preservation process.

4. Step Four

PRESERVATION PROCESS

The freeze drying process takes about 2 week to remove the moisture from the flowers. Please note however, a cycle must be completed before another can start so if there is higher demand, your flowers may remain in a holding freezer until there is room in the freeze dryer.

During the 10 - 14 days, under vacuum, the water in the flowers is extracted under high pressure. Afterwards, we remove the flowers and apply a post-treatment natural product. If required/requested, we lastly brighten up the flowers with a coat of airbrushed paint.

Other flowers, depending on the end product ordered, will go through a different drying process consisting of silica gel(s) that absorbs the moisture out of the flowers.

5. Step Five

FLORAL DESIGN & FRAMING

Finally, the flowers are placed into your display case or submerged into its resin solution (which hardens over time). If doing a shadowbox, we can also place others items in the art piece such as invitations or other keepsakes that will be showcased. (All of this will have been planned out during our consultation.)

Each shadowbox is custom made and fitted to your style and need. Once the flowers and items are fully dry, the piece is ready for its new home! For the resin-based pieces, we offer many different shapes, sizes, designs, and styles. Please inquire.

6. Step Six

RECEIVING YOUR FINAL PRODUCT

Your flowers will be ready for pick up or delivery within 6 months, depending on current demand. If requiring a quicker turnaround we offer an expedited VIP service. Please inquire to info@petalpreservation.com

 FAQs

  • Yes, if you have not yet placed your initial order online, or have not paid us at your consultation, we ask that a full payment is placed upon dropping off/shipping the flowers to us. This secures your spot. A lot of work and costs go into making your display as beautiful as possible, and we want to ensure our customer is committed to the process as well.

Although not necessary, you are encouraged to place your initial order online. We offer free in-person or phone consultations after the online purchase where we can collaborate and refine the order. Although we take a full payment on the order placed, if we adjust anything during our consultation and the final bill is less we will refund you the difference. Deposits are non-refundable.

  • Our VIP service guarantees your product returned within 75 days of drop-off. This service, which costs $150, are for those needing a more immediate return of the final product. Please note, for our most customized orders that require a long lead time, such as a particular shadowbox that is not typically manufactured, we cannot offer this service.

  • The freeze-drying process does alter the color of the flowers to varying degrees. There is certainly a difference between a fresh cut flower and one that has been preserved. For example, white flowers take on a cream tone, while most red flowers darken somewhat. Of course, the age and conditions of your flowers when they arrive will also affect the end product. That being said, we make every effort to maintain the original color. This is accomplished through natural chemicals as well as airbrushing if the customer desires the add-on service.

  • Yes, we have a full service automated e-store where you can make a purchase.

  • We do offer the option to replace petals which do not hold up through the sublimation process with replacement petals supplied by the Petal Preservation Co. Although we recommend this, if you do not want replacement petals (i.e. just your exact, original petals despite the condition) please let us know.

  • Shedding in small amounts naturally occurs over time. This is especially true of smaller flowers like hydrangeas, baby’s breath, and golden rods. As well, we recommend all freeze dried flowers are kept under a protected glass. That being said, if it looks like your bouquet is losing flowers or structure more than anticipated, please reach out to us.

  • We encourage you to make your initial decision here via our website as far in advance of your event as possible. However, if you prefer you can entirely skip this step and set up a free consultation (in person or over the phone) where we can walk you through all of the steps and options. We would then take your provisional payment. It is important to keep in mind that the earlier you do everything, the more we can accommodate your needs and requests. It is highly recommended to do this at least one month before your event.

To stress, after making your initial decisions on the website we will still have a free consultation where your order can be amended (and price adjusted accordingly). Once we receive the flowers and see the actual size we can adjust the order once more and finalize everything (if for instance we need to order a larger shadowbox). We are always available for a consultation to review your order and offer suggestions for creating a keepsake that best suits both your flowers and personal style.

The provisional payment is non-refundable. However, as mentioned above, if your final piece is cheaper, we will refund you the difference.

  • The short answer is as soon as possible! Although we are able to place your flowers in a holding freezer for quite some time, we do have to stop taking orders if the queue becomes too long. If we can’t return your bouquet in approximately 6 months, we may refer you to one of our partners. For this reason, we highly recommend you place your order as soon as possible and place the initial order online. A good goal is to book a spot 3 to 4 months before your event (for a wedding for instance).

  • Nearly all flowers can be freeze-dried. That being said, some flowers hold up better than others throughout the process. For instance, flowers with smaller sized petals may not do as well. Additionally, Daisies have small sockets and thus require additional pre/post treatment care.

  • Freeze Drying flowers should allow them to last for a very long time. As long as you don’t expose the flowers to extreme heat or cold, they should remain in their preserved state. We also apply various biodegradable chemicals that help preserve the flowers.

Please try to avoid opening up the display case as contact with the flowers may affect their durability. It is important to note freeze drying does not improve the condition of the flower. Thus, if wilted flowers come to us, there is only so much we can do. To stress, all keepsakes must be kept away from insects, direct sunlight, humidity and all extreme temperatures. Once the water is removed and the flowers remain untouched (i.e. stay enclosed in the case), nothing major should happen to them. Please refer to our question below regarding drooping/dropping.

  • The process takes anywhere from 14-21 days, depending on the particular flower and size of bouquet. This doesn’t include any time spent in the pretreatreatment, post-treatment, or design stages. Due to demand, we typically have a queue so encourage you to book ahead to secure your place. If you require a quick turnaround, we also offer a VIP service that guarantees your product within 75 days of drop-off. Please see additional details on our VIP service.

  • Freeze drying is a flower preservation process which aims to maintain the flowers natural shape and color. This is accomplished through sublimation; the process of a substance going directly from a solid to a gas without passing through the intermediate liquid phase. We take the water contained in the flowers and with the use of a vacuum, extract the liquid without affecting the structure of the flower.

  • This is a great question. One which we will answer by saying, “it depends.” We offer a wide variety of options, all at various price points. Our most affordable options include a freeze drying of your flowers returned in a basic display case without any other mementos or add-on services such as airbrushing. On our premium options, we offer your flowers, air-brushed, in an elegant display case, accompanied by such items as your invitations and save the date. On top of this, pricing is determined by such add-on features as the type of matting and type of glass.

  • egarding flowers, it is ok to place a provisional order if you don’t yet know the flowers which will be in your bouquet. Once you know just send us a message. We can very easily change the color of a shadowbox for example as we won’t place the order until we actually receive your flowers. Nearly all flowers can be freeze dried so we can work with what you give us.

Regarding the floral preservation display case, if you are unable to decide, please choose to initiate a consultation so we can walk you through the process/options and get your order in the queue. As a reminder the order isn’t finalized initially so you can change the display case at any point until the consultation is complete and we have your flowers.

  • This is one of the most crucial points in the preservation process. The sooner we receive the flowers, the better the flower drying results will be. Please do everything you can to get your flowers to us no later than 3 days after your event. Within 24 hours is ideal.

  • We offer standard glass protection for our shadow boxes. However, we also offer some very cost-effective upgrades that are highly recommended. One includes UV Blocking Glass, which acts as a mirror with regard to Ultraviolet light wavelengths. UV rays are one of the most significant sources of degradation in the flowers. As well, some people prefer acrylic uv glass which is more durable. Please see the add-on section when ordering for pricing.

  • No, we offer a product where we simply return your loose petals. To note, we also offer loose petals for your special occasion, i.e. petals for wedding aisles, etc. We do not offer a product however where we return your freeze dried bouquet re-put together without purchasing a display case which comes from us.

  • The easiest approach to is to pay with a major credit card in our online store. However, we also take cash, Paypal and Venmo. All refunds are made by the means you paid us.

  • When you drop off/send your flowers, please bring all of these other keepsake items. It will be a much smoother process if we can get all of your mementos at one time. If placing the initial order online, you can note which items you want to include and an estimate of the display case size will populate.
